A talented photographer, who is also a close friend, allowed me to work from a photo she captured on St. Helena Island.  This island is one of the barrier islands that trace our southeast coast. The West African tradition of coiled basket making came to South Carolina in the 1700s. Over time the functional designs of the early baskets have evolved into intricate works of art.

The vintner’s work is never done. He has to be vigilant day and night, protecting his vines from pests, drought, frost, excessive rain and heat. Other than a successful harvest, I expect his highest form of compensation is living in California’s beautiful wine country.
